Lake Taupo

About this Destination

The crowning glory of the Waikato region is Lake Taupo. A sparkling gem set in the heart of the verdant North Island, Lake Taupo is the second largest inland freshwater lake in the geopolitical area. Lake Taupo, measuring around 700 sq. km,  came into existence following a volcanic explosion so massive that its effects were felt directly in Europe and China where the days became darker because of the ash thrown into the air. The aptly named ‘Craters of the Moon’ are huge geysers that shoot steaming air and bubbling mud pools point to the lake’s inferno of a creation. The geothermal effects can even be felt in the form of warm water currents in some of the beaches of Taupo.New Zealand’s most popularly visited tourist attraction, the Huka falls, are also located within a stone’s throw away from Lake Taupo. More than 200,000 litres of water flows through the falls per second in a section of New Zealand’s longest inland river. Huka falls is also a hotbed for water sport activities like white water rafting and kayaking. Jet boat rides and river cruises are other popular activities in the area. Water sport is also very popular at Lake Taupo itself and one can find many water skiing operators near the lakeshore. Fishing is another huge draw to the region as Taupo is also home to New Zealand’s largest trout fishery and is the perfect place to try and catch that big trout that will be proudly splayed over your social media. The area surrounding Lake Taupo is also prime terrain for mountain biking and there are many mountain biking trails that snake through the woods around the lake. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing, one of New Zealand’s most stunning walking trails is at the doorstep of Lake Taupo and is an adventure begging to be had. Beautiful views of Mount Doom, of Lord of the Rings fame, and the Emerald Lakes are another plus point. The region is also known for its manuka honey. The Great Lake Trail, as its name suggests is a cycling trail that circumnavigates the wooded areas surrounding Lake Taupo. Bicycles can be rented at bike shops near the lake and they can even be shuttled by using public transit buses ensuring that all you have to do is pedal on and enjoy the view.
