Nagarjunsagar

About this Destination

Nagarjunsagar, formerly known as Vijayapuri, is a prominent tourist destination known for its massive Nagarjunasagar Dam, one of the largest masonry dams in the world. The dam is located between Nalgonda district in Telangana and Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh. Built across the Krishna River, the dam stands as a significant feat of engineering, providing irrigation and hydroelectric power to the region. The reservoir created by the dam is one of the largest in India, surrounded by scenic landscapes, making it a popular spot for boating and picnics. The town derives its name from Acharya Nagarjuna, a revered Buddhist scholar and philosopher. Nagarjunakonda, an island within the reservoir, is a significant archaeological site where relics of Buddhist civilization have been preserved. Once a thriving Buddhist center during the reign of the Ikshvaku dynasty, Nagarjunakonda features ancient stupas, monasteries, and relics. These artifacts are preserved in the Nagarjunakonda Museum, accessible by boat, offering a glimpse into the region's Buddhist heritage. Nagarjunsagar beautifully combines natural beauty, historical significance, and modern infrastructure, making it a must-visit destination.
